Ismah’s Story

Ismah is a customer at Look Ahead’s Antill Road Learning Disability Day Service in Tower Hamlets. Her confidence has grown since joining the service.

Being at Antill Road is great, I get to come four days a week. There’s always so much to do.

I love gardening. I get to water the plants with the hose. It’s amazing to watch them grow over time, and I’m looking forward to doing even more outdoors in the summer. Being at Antill Road has really helped my confidence, I help out with staff interviews, and make sure the managers hire the right people to work with me and my friends.

I love socialising too. We do lots of art here, I made special cards to decorate the centre for Eid, and I’m helping get other decorations ready for our coronation party as well. We know how to celebrate here that’s for sure. I really enjoy all the delicious food like curry, and healthy snacks like strawberries and pineapples. It’s great fun to get dressed up, and I always do my make-up, especially eye shadow and mascara. Sometimes the staff and I put henna on too.

I have plenty of friends here, I know lots of the other customers from school. We help each other out and have a good laugh. Sometimes I go out with my support worker too, last year we even went to Hackney Empire to watch a pantomime, that was great fun.

But for me, the best things about Antill Road is that we get to enjoy dancing and having guests over for special occasions. I took part in a special dance performance in Whitechapel before, and I hope I can do it again soon. The staff also organised a fantastic birthday party for me, and my mum, my sister and two brothers all came and joined in, it meant the world to me.
