Saturday 10th October marked both World Homelessness Day and World Mental Health Day. While these are two separate awareness days, they are deeply connected and central to Look Ahead’s purpose. Every day, our services support people experiencing homelessness, mental health challenges, or both, helping them find stability, regain independence and build better futures.

At Look Ahead, we know that homelessness and mental health are often closely linked. Many people facing homelessness are also managing the effects of trauma, poor mental health, social isolation or other complex challenges. Equally, having a safe, stable home can be one of the most important foundations for recovery, wellbeing and independence.

World Homelessness Day and World Mental Health Day is an opportunity to recognise the incredible work our colleagues do every day and reflect on the difference our services make across London and the South East.

Supporting people with mental health needs

Look Ahead is one of the leading providers of specialist mental health care, support and housing services in the region, supporting more than 1,000 people with mental health needs through a range of community-based services. These include crisis houses, hospital step-down services, neighbourhood mental health centres and longer-term supported housing.

Over the past year, we have continued to develop innovative approaches that help people access support closer to home and reduce reliance on hospital services. This includes the expansion of our Gateway Mental Health Service in Southwark and the development of the pioneering Barnsley Street Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre in Tower Hamlets, which has become a national example of how housing, health and community support can work together around people’s needs.

The work at our Barnsley Street Neighbourhood Mental Health Centre was recognised at the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) London Awards in July, winning the Community Benefit Award. The service is now shortlisted in the national RICS awards on Thursday 22nd October.

Look Ahead’s Ibis House Step-down Service was also recognised by the National Housing Federation as a best practice case study ahead of Supported Housing Week, taking place from 19–23 October 2026.

Supporting people with experience of homelessness

Across our homelessness and complex needs services, Look Ahead support people through hostels, assessment centres, supported housing, rough sleeping services and domestic abuse services.

Our teams support people who may have experienced rough sleeping, insecure housing, substance misuse, trauma, offending histories or severe social exclusion. We focus on helping each person understand their needs, develop new skills, access healthcare and move towards greater stability and independence.

We have also seen national recognition of this work, including recent coverage of our Heaney Hub service by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, where customers shared their experiences of moving on from homelessness and rebuilding their lives with support from Look Ahead.
