Look Ahead’s “Garden Heroes” transform service gardens over the summer

Customers, colleagues and volunteers across Look Ahead services teamed up over the summer to brighten up outdoor spaces and create more welcoming gardens for everyone to enjoy.

Led by our Information Governance Manager Sarah Azhashemi, the teams – also known as “Garden Heroes” – rolled up their sleeves and got to work, planting flowers, painting furniture, tidying shared spaces and improving gardens at our forensic mental health service Tabard Court, and our Felstead Street and Clarence Road.

The work was made possible with funding from Inspiring East Village Community, alongside the time, energy and creativity of customers, staff and volunteers both from Look Ahead and our corporate partners.

Mark, a customer at Tabard Court, was one of those who got involved. He said: “I was involved in painting and planting at Sarah’s direction. It’s fruitful when you see everything coming to blossom. It’s fulfilling.”

Sarah said: “I thoroughly enjoyed working with customers and volunteers at each of these projects. Everyone made a fantastic contribution, and we now have beautiful outdoor spaces for activities and relaxation.”

At Felstead Street, volunteers from Look Ahead contractor Idverde also supported the project by rebuilding raised flower beds and donating several tonnes of compost.

Following the improvements, services celebrated their new-look gardens with garden parties, afternoon teas and home-baked cakes.

The events offered customers, colleagues and volunteers the chance to enjoy the spaces they had helped create.  A big thank you to everyone who took part in helping make the gardens more attractive, relaxing and enjoyable places for customers and staff.
