Safety & Quality
What we do to keep you safeÂ
Regular fire risk assessments
We routinely check buildings to ensure they are safe and meet fire safety standards.Â
Checking fire doors, alarms and escape routes
We make sure these are working properly and that escape routes are always kept clear.
Fire safety guidance
We’ll explain fire safety in your building when you move in and provide annual fire safety communications.Â
Regular fire drills
Where necessary, Look Ahead staff will carry out fire drills. If you’re unsure about your building, check your annual fire safety letter or speak to a member of staff.Â
Personal evacuation plans
If you need extra help in an emergency, we’ll work with you to make a tailored evacuation plan. Please let us know about any changes to your circumstances so we can support you.Â
What you can do to stay safe
Fire safety starts with small daily habits. Here’s how you can help protect yourself and others:
Smoke alarms – your early warning system
- Test your smoke alarms regularly.
- Report any issues to Look Ahead immediately.
In the kitchen
- Never leave cooking unattended.
- Keep flammable items (like tea towels and paper) away from the hob.
- Turn off appliances when you’ve finished cooking.
Electrical safety
- Don’t overload plug sockets – one plug per socket is safest.
- Check cables for damage, because frayed or exposed wires can cause fires.
Smoking and candles
- Always use an ashtray and ensure cigarettes are fully out.
- Never smoke in bed.
- Keep candles on a stable surface and never leave them unattended.
Heating safety – portable heaters
- Keep heaters at least one metre away from curtains, bedding, or anything flammable.
- Never use heaters to dry clothes.
- Always turn off portable heaters before going to bed or leaving the room.
E-bikes and e-scooters – fire hazard
- E-bikes and e-scooters are not allowed in communal areas and are prohibited in Look Ahead services.
- Their batteries can overheat and cause serious fires.
What to do if there is a fire where you live
It is important to know what to do in the event of a fire or emergency:
- The evacuation strategy for your building is displayed on the Fire Action Notice at the building’s entrance. You will also receive an annual letter from
- Look Ahead confirming this information.
- Never block corridors, stairs, or doors with personal items.
- Keep keys where everyone in your home can find them.
- Report any damage to fire doors, windows, or alarms.
- If you see a fire, get to safety and call 999 immediately.
Fire safety is a team effort—your actions help keep everyone safe. If you have any questions, just ask – we’re here to help.
