This month staff from Look Ahead’s Kent-based Male Independent Domestic Abuse Advocacy Service (MIDAAS) service visited Parliament for discussions with lawmakers.

The service manager Karrie, and Josiah who works as one of MIDAAS’ Independent Domestic Violence Advocates (IDVAs) met with Lauren Edwards MP and other Kent and Medway representatives to discuss the work of the service and addressing wider issues around men’s experience of domestic abuse.

Our staff led powerful conversations around the lack of awareness, representation, and support for male survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, and how this impacts access to services and justice, and emphasising the role of our service in addressing these issues at a local level.

Key to the agenda for the MIDAAS team was joining discussions on the Interpersonal Abuse and Violence Against Men Strategy Bill, which has the potential to bring much-needed visibility and strategic action for men experiencing domestic abuse.

After the meetings Karrie said: “A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to listen and collaborate. It’s encouraging to be part of conversations that not only raise awareness, but actively co-produce solutions to improve services and outcomes for men who are so often overlooked.

“If we truly want to tackle interpersonal abuse, we must ensure all victims are seen, heard, and supported.”

As a service, MIDAAS recognises that men may experience and respond to domestic abuse differently than women and offers support accordingly. The support is provided by IDVAs, who offer comprehensive risk assessments, personalised safety planning, emotional and practical advocacy, and guidance on legal, housing, and support services.

In the 12 months since its launch on 1 June, 2024, the service has supported over 400 people affected by domestic abuse including children.
